How to Become an Architect

Are you wondering how to become an architect?

If you want to make your impact on a city’s skyline with memorable structures, a career in architecture may be for you! Architects design new buildings and create the plans used to construct them.

What steps can you take to get started on the path to becoming an architect?

Research Careers in Architecture

The first step  is to do research. You might be interested in architecture, but it’s important to learn more about this career and make sure it’s a good fit for you.

Some career aspects to keep in mind include average wages and benefits, job demand, required skills, education requirements and work environment.

Here are some resources to research careers in architecture:

Get Educated

If you’re ready and excited to start the next part of your journey, it’s time to get some education!

Becoming an architect typically requires a degree in architecture from a college or university accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB). Accredited schools may offer bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degrees in architecture.

Coursework for architecture can include  architecture history, construction processes and relevant math and science fields like calculus and physics. Drafting, computer-aided design (CAD), building information modeling (BIM) and other studio work are also included in architecture training.

Architecture students are also required to complete an internship to get real-world experience and learn directly from professional architects.

Get Licensed

Upon completing an architecture degree and an internship, you can then apply for a license in your state or territory. You will need to be licensed to practice architecture.

As part of the licensing process, you will need to pass the Architect Registration Examination. Licensing boards in some jurisdictions may also have some additional requirements.

Become a Pro

After completing your education, gaining experience through your internship, and earning your license, you are officially a professional architect!
